Glad you got it running. The index.php file is the bootstrap for the framework and is loading the application. ZF2 projects mostly have the document root there.
The .htaccess is used to serve the files correctly to the users. Sorry for the late reply, I was on vacation.

Your document root of the server running on local must be set to the public folder. Because in this folder resides the .htaccess and the index.php.

You should replace all / in the require statements with \ or even better with the constant DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR This will make sure all paths are translated correctly. You'll still ned those require statements for mail. The autoloader only ensures that all dependencies are loaded correctly. $zf2Path=...

I would like to see this as a setting for content assist in preferences. Turn on templates <-> Turn off template in proposal window.
