How force ZS7 to recognise php files with no file extension?

Post by colinflack » Sun Nov 15, 2009 11:42 pm

Q) How to force ZS to recognise php files with no file extension?

I have an old project which doesnt use file extensions.
Please... no rants about the rights or wrongs of this situation, its an old project. end of.

I need to do some updates and just want ZS to recogize that the stuff between the <?php ?> tags in the files which I've opened in the PHP editor IS php code. durrhhh. but it wont. grrhhh.

This used to be easily possible with ZS 5.nnn - just add * to file types - but ZS7 wont accept the wildcard
I found an old forum post by eabovsky how to make it work in 6.1

But that doesnt seem to work in 7

Can anybody help please.

Thanks

Does anyone have any ideas here?

I have projects that have command line executable scripts written in php that form part of the project (for jobs, manual tasks etc) along with the standard web components.

All such scripts live in their own directory and don't have a .php file extension because it's just pointless noise to the shell and the user.

If I try and force Zend Studio to open it as a PHP file (PHP Explorer->Right click on file->Open with->Other->PHP Editor) it whinges about it being an "Unsupported Content Type" and I end up with an editor without any highlighting etc.

Looks like it's a 6 year old issue with Eclipse so I guess not until it gets fixed there.

From time to time I curse this disability of ZS.
I'm working on some drupal stuff which has lots of php files with .module extension which zs doesnt recognise as php

As somebody says in the (SEVEN YEAR OLD!) bug thread at eclipse
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=46297
If I tell it what content type I am opening the file as it
should just believe me.
I just saw this page
http://www.zerologic.com/Blog/Zend-Stud ... s-PHP.html
which has pretty explicit and fairly simple instructions with a workaround, but I cant get the fix to work in zs8 beta.

is royganor here? should this kludge work roy?
anybody else got any idea how to get zs to open random files as PHP?
please?

I just checked out Aptana 3 and it has this functionality built in.

Its very easy to associate any extension to any editor.

So if Aptana can do it (FOR FREE!) why does Zend find it such a problem?
[ I guess the answer is use aptana then ;-) ]

btw thread title say ZS7 but as I understand it this hasnt worked in any release since the old non-eclipse ZS5 and still doesnt work in ZS8

This trick should work in version 8 as well (@ geenets don't forget to run ZendStudio -clean command).
Have you tried to contact our support and ask for this feature?

no, but this is the official zend studio forum and the issue has been asked about here before, and over 1 year in this thread.
and royganor offered the guy on the zerologic site a (messy) workaround.
So perhaps I can assume from your question that it is just a waste of time posting questions here, and the dev team take absolutely no notice of users needs, questions or opinions

I understand that Zend took decision to go with Eclipse after 5 and it is a complex application - but you charge good money for it.
So is it reasonable that pretty basic and necessary functionality that existed in ZS5 (and exists now in other eclipse ide's) should have just been dropped without any thought?

I think this sums up the charge of a feeling of neglect that is often raised here by zs users re various issues.

Anyway, I cant get it to work in zs8 beta. I think the structure has changed.
maybe if still possible to make the fix work you would be so kind as to detail it for others.

But for myself I wont be purchasing ZS again - I have to work with drupal for maybe this coming year and if ZS cant display many of the applications files as php code whats the point?
from drupal.org:
534,632 people in 228 countries* speaking 182 languages power Drupal.
and maybe none of them use Zend Studio!

geenets, about *.module see here - http://kb.zend.com/index.php?View=entry&EntryID=180
Regarding files without extension, there is no solution yet.
