The upcoming update (Build ID: 20120420) includes performance fixes for typing in big php files. It will be available soon on the beta update site.

I think I know where the problem is now
it's definitelly outline. Try opening a big file with many methods and classes. I have a file with form classes about 3k lines.
Try this: hold down down cursor key, the screen is scrolling fine. But sometimes when you release the key and press it again, the cursor freezes for a second. I think it's because the outline is updated on key up and sometimes the update takes more than 1 second and so it freezes the whole thing. The cursor starts moving again when it updates. The outline definitelly doesn't run in the background. Also when scrolling with outline enabled the cpu usage is doubled (16% instead of 8%).

It's a bit better but still it is slow sometimes.
You should try to use this for developing some large real project, automated test are not so good.
And for ex netbeans reports automatically slowdowns in the studio, you should probably add this too
