i5_connect vs db2_connect

I noticed some code in some of our programs where it does an i5_connect and a db2_connect and it throws in error if either fails. Do you need both? What is the difference between the two?

We have a new machine we are going to and installed a new version of Zend and it looks like the i5_connect is no longer supported (or at the very least, need to install more software to sort of mask over it).

i5_connect uses the Aura easycom toolkit --- not supported any more.
db2_connect uses the db2 extension for database connectivity.

The long story, points you should know:

1) The toolkit provided previously from Easycom/Aura is no longer a part of our Zend Server V6-V8 product and all support and request for fixes should be forwarded to Aura support.

The version provided in the Zend Server V5.0.2 ( PHP 5.3 ) (2ZSVRP) that is already installed will not run on IBM i V7R1 and up.

The catch...
a) You can not upgrade your IBM i OS V6R1 To V7.X - EASYCOM license will not work.
b) Any new installation or replications of the installed Zend Server V5.x will cause the license to expire.
c) You can purchase a license from Aura, there is no Zend Support for extensions not provided by us.(EASYCom not supported by Zend)

If you have an Easycom license purchased from Aura you can upgrade to Zend Server and use the easycom libraries for zend server php 5.5-5.6.

2) The IBM XMLSERVICE toolkit is used today with the Zend Server for IBM i.

Explore the XMLSERVICE toolkit with the Compatibility Wrapper and gradually convert any Easycom app. to use XMLSERVICE toolkit.
(Installed with ZS 8.x)
YiPs site: ... XMLService

The Compatibility Wrapper (CW) allows scripts that use i5 Toolkit functionality to continue to do so, with no code changes or minimal changes, with requests fulfilled by the XMLSERVICE Toolkit. ... rapper.htm
