Ok, it wasn't the ALIAS issue. It turned out to be the prepared insert statement. It did not like qualifying the character fields with apostrophes and so would fail updating the ALIASed table. (But didn't give a too descriptive error message either.) Once I removed the character qualifiers, it worke...
